Over the past decade, I have advised entrepreneurs and inventors on this process through technology transfer operations at various Universities across Canada. Currently, I offer these services to entrepreneurs and organizations independently, on a project by project basis. My goal is to support entrepreneurs, so their innovations are brought to the public, to make their clients’ lives simpler, better or more pleasant. My interest in the technology development area began during graduate and postdoctoral research work – both in areas of molecular biology where the impact of basic science on human disease was tangible. Then I moved to an investment bank where I analyzed the business plans of various biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies trying to bring new therapies to market based on emerging technologies allowing me to provide financiers with a rational basis for investment. Subsequent work in strategizing and administering programs in medical research developed my networks in all the innovation ecosystem (government, University administration, consumers, philanthropers, academics, investors, entrepreneurs). My direct involvement in the innovation ecosystem includes the negotiation and execution of licenses and related agreements to commercialize intellectual property. I have experience working with start-up companies and am well versed in the use of intellectual property to build businesses. I have a passion for writing and am able to craft compelling grant proposals, business plans and related business documents.

Karen Fischer is a Partner with RK Fischer & Associates which is a business consulting & coaching firm which helps Canadian businesses start, grow, manage, and transition their business. RK Fischer & Associates develops feasibility studies & business plans for businesses seeking funding, and we have partnerships with financial lenders & investors.
Karen has over 25 years’ experience in sales, marketing, and general management for large, medium, as well as small start-up businesses, with the last ten years working in executive roles. She is currently the Secretary/Treasurer of the Board of Directors for BACD and volunteers her time as a mentor and trainer as needed. RK Fischer & Associates is a member of the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade, and Karen has volunteered for several committees over the years and helped develop their Professional Development Series.
