HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN YOUR BUSINESS?
I worked with my father for the past few years doing HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) which helped me gain experience in this type of work, and this year I decided to start my own business doing dryer vent cleaning because I already knew how to do it from the past years working with my dad.
HOW DID THE HELP YOU GOT FROM BACD IMPACT YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS?
I learned so many things about being an entrepreneur, how to actually start your own business, how to be successful once you have your own business, and how to maintain your business and keep growing it once it is off the ground.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
I’ve always wanted to own my own business, and I plan on being an entrepreneur after university so I thought now would be a good time to learn about being a business owner and get some experience.
WHAT WAS MORE DIFFICULT THAN YOU THOUGHT IT WOULD BE?
I found out that there is a lot more work to do when you own your own business, but I still think that it is worth it to be your own boss.
WHAT UNEXPECTED CHALLENGES DID YOU HAVE?
The biggest challenge I had was getting my business off the ground and getting customers. It takes time to spread word of your business and make a name for yourself, but over time it becomes easier and more people know who you are.
HOW DO YOU MARKET YOUR BUSINESS?
I use Facebook, lawn signs, door hangers, business cards, and word of mouth. Going door to door was the best way for me to get customers at the very beginning, but now Facebook and my lawn signs are the best way for me to market my business.
HOW ARE PEOPLE AWARE OF YOUR BUSINESS?
Through word of mouth, seeing my lawn signs or door hangers, and customers referring me to their friends and neighbours.
WHAT DO YOU DO TO KEEP ABREAST OF THE CHANGES IN YOUR BUSINESS AND IN YOUR INDUSTRY?
I try to be extremely thorough and professional in what I do, so that my customers are always happy and know that they have been properly taken care of. This helps me keep a good name for myself so that people will call me and not another company.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESS?
Put in the time and effort at the beginning to market your business and spread the word of what you do, and it will pay off down the road by having more people know who you are and what you do.
WHAT IS IT THAT YOU DO THAT’S MADE YOU A SUCCESS?
I provide a service that everyone could use, and not many other people in my area do what I do. This helps keep the demand for my service high, and the thorough and professional work that I do ensures that my customers are satisfied and more people call me.
