How did you get started in your business?

After working in the Public Relations industry for the last 5 years, I’ve had the opportunity to work on some amazing projects with some great brands. However, I was always working contract to contract, with no stability. I decided to try doing some freelance work, when I discovered there is in fact a demand for the services I offer. Local business workshops and the BACD program, gave me the necessary tools and encouraged me to take the plunge and give it 100%.

How did the help you got from BACD impact you and your business?

BACD program allowed me to look at my business from all angles. I learned that I was limiting myself and not charging enough. BACD gave me the knowledge and tools to not only increase business, but to protect my business too. Since being in the program I’ve been able to speak to lawyers, business professionals, and like- minded individuals who have helped me increase sales, appear more professional, and more knowledgeable.

What inspired you to start your own business?

My passion for publicity and event planning, and wanting to be my own boss. I’ve worked for some great brands in the entertainment, lifestyle and tech industry, so I knew there was a demand for the services I offered, I just needed to be pushed in the right direction.

What was more difficult than you thought it would be?

Pricing was more difficult than i thought it would be. I would be afraid to quote a high number, but then be disappointed when i was over-worked for less. I had to learn my value and my worth.

What unexpected challenges did you have?

Working with clients and managing their expectations has been the hardest part. Whether it was bad communication, late payments, indecisiveness, these are all a part of the business i’m in, and I had to learn not to take it personally when things aren’t moving smoothly.

How do you market your business/ How are people aware of your business?

I’ve been very lucky so far, it has been via referral. I’ve started to implement my marketing plan which consists of paid advertising, networking, and B2B marketing.I am very active on social media with my business. I post event photos, past and on-going campaigns, and behind the scene live video of the stuff we have going on at the agency.

What do you do to keep abreast of the changes in your business and in your industry?

I’m constantly researching my industry and attending networking and business events. I like to know what’s going on, what’s trending, and how I can be involved.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start their own business?

Research the market, ask other business owners for advice, and take advantage of start-up programs, they really help you fine-tune your business.

What is it that you do that’s made you a success?

I pay attention to the customers needs, and position myself in a way that they trust me to take control of their brand and their event. From head-to-toe logistics, event design, and sponsorship, customers leave feeling relaxed and in good hands, with a return on their investment.
