BeNovel is a marketing consulting firm that focuses on developing marketing strategy, integrating marketing platforms, such as the developing of a new website, and launching of new products or services for small to medium size businesses, self-publishers, and nonprofit organizations looking to thrive.






How did you get started in this business?

Starting my own business was born out of a desire to help other people, tapping into the broad skill set that I have in the marketing field.

I have worked in Market Research in a corporate environment in both manufacturing and publishing industries for many years, eventually this led to managing a marketing department in a Business to Business environment. I developed further skills in communication and sales in other marketing related areas.

I started BeNovel three years ago while I was working on a self-publishing project for a non-profit group. It was a labour of love that transitioned into helping other indie authors to market their books. The client base recently has shifted toward supporting small to medium sized businesses, particularly in B2B where I have over 25 years of experience.

BACD helped me walk through my process of business development. They provided a form of mentorship I could reach out to as I took the necessary steps to realize my goal.

Why did you think you wanted to be an entrepreneur?

I wanted flexibility to work with different people, different schedules. The independence it provides and the more personal growth I am able to experience as I learn about my new clients and the different industries they come from.

What was more difficult than you thought it would be?

Everything takes longer than you think. Sometimes sales can be a challenge, you have to persevere.

How do you market your business? How are people aware of your business?

The business is marketed through networking events, being affiliated with professional organizations, and building a strong network of associates.

What do you do to keep abreast of the changes in your business and in your industry?

Attend conferences, participate in webinars, and industry events. Read material and blogs on business related topics. Stay active in the industry.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start their own business?

Be thorough – get clear and focused on what it is that you want to accomplish. Tap into professional resources when you need them. Not everyone is good at everything. It is useful to know the right time and place to reach out to. Be patient, persistent and plan well. Revisit your plan on a regular basis.

What is it that you do that’s made you a success?

All of the above and being focused and flexible. You have to know when to react in a different way, to evolve.

Being chosen as a Finalist for Integrated Digital Marketing by judges of the Canadian Association of Marketing Professionals in 2015 was a proud moment. The project BeNovel was recognized for was done with a meager budget on behalf of a non-profit group. The accolade speaks to the ability of producing high-quality, professional marketing tools with constrained finances.

Has technology impacted how you conduct business?

Yes, technology has impacted my business in many ways. From how I communicate with clients – email, e-publications, and so on, to the different technology used to produce dynamic websites, theirs and mine. As well as other forms of technology to help clients achieve their business goals in a cost effective way.

What is the future for this type of business?

It is a growing type of business. While the methods might change, as long as there are businesses out there, there is a need to help them strengthen their positions in the market.

Whom do you seek advice from for your business?

Besides BACD, it’s a collaboration with my network of associates.

Do you have any special offers of interest to businesses in need of marketing support?
